Introducing Songbird Haven Farm

Introducing Songbird Haven Farm

I’m so excited to introduce you all to Songbird Haven Farm!

We’re launching our farm with a 10-12 person farm share (i.e., community supported agriculture program or CSA) and on-farm events like u-pick days, workshops, and other fun excuses to join us out in Woodinville. It will be a busy spring, summer, and fall. But we think we’ve set ourselves up to launch this endeavor in our “free time” and still have fun.

I love “let’s make this thing happen” mode! And we’re definitely in it. We’ve registered the business, worked with friends to set up a CSA pick up spot on their back porch, we’ve staked out our quarter acre, planned our rows, bought seeds and potting soil, ordered two caterpillar tunnels, started tomatoes, learned to use a small tractor, met our farm neighbors, acquired insulated bags, and built a website. Now all we need to do is grow some beautiful vegetables.

In the midst of the busyness, I’m also trying to keep our guiding vision at the fore. That’s also why we chose the name Songbird Haven Farm. At first, it might seem a little over the top romantic. But providing habitat is a key part of our farm’s mission. We’ll be providing habitat beneath the soil since we won’t plow after our initial field prep this year. We’ll also be providing habitat above ground since we won’t use chemical sprays and eventually we’ll be planting hedgerows. These shrubs are important habitat for…songbirds. They will also create a cozy micro-climate for the vegetables.

As if on cue, the green little frog (pictured above) was hopping across the field as we measured out our beds yesterday. It was the perfect reminder that we want to enhance her habitat, not destroy it, as we create Songbird Haven Farm.
