Featuring These Stars

Featuring These Stars

We haven’t signed a lease on our quarter acre but we’ve had some good conversations with the farm incubator manager. Since it seems like we’re moving forward, I pulled out my crop planning database this weekend to prepare a list of seeds to order. Thank you, October self!

I had fun revisiting my fall choices and got excited about them all over again. So I thought I’d share a few of our featured crops that I am most looking forward to growing this year.

Shelf-stable Standouts

We know that time will be tight when we’re farming and have full time jobs. So I’m excited about growing some crops that will be shelf-stable when we harvest them. The orca beans (pictured in the banner) and Black Dakota Popcorn are two of my favorites on our seed list. We’re new to growing and harvesting both dried beans and corn. So late August will be quite the learning opportunity.

Beautiful Lettuces

Growing rows of beautiful heads of lettuce definitely makes you a full fledged organic farmer. I hope that our Red Vogue, Hungarian Winter Pink, Flashy Gem, and Winter Queen are stars in our garden.

Fun Tunnel Tomatoes

We’ll be setting up a high tunnel for our hot weather crops. I’ve kept an eye out for short season tomatoes and peppers with fun names (e.g., Dancing with Smurfs), pretty patterns, and of course delicious flavors.

I’m looking forward to reporting back on our success!
